Most of the dairy land in the region surrounding Osorno and Mafil is suited to continental tall fescue cultivars. These are preferred over perennial ryegrass in areas close to the coast, which experience lower rainfall and warmer summers than inland. Tall fescue has been used successfully where soil fertility and grazing management programs were instituted. Regions around Los Angeles and Santiago with irrigation are suited to continental tall fescue cultivars, where they have been used and resulted in acceptable summer production and sheep weight gains. Mediterranean types are suited to dryland areas where annual rainfall exceeds 400 mm.
